10 Non-Riding Activities You Can Do With Your Horse

Some days riding just isn't an option whether it's because your horse is lame (hurt), the weather isn't in our favor, you are injured, you are waiting for new tack or we just might not have the time. You still might want to work with your horse but you're not quite sure what to do. In today's blog I will go over 10 things you can do with your horse without even sitting on their back.

  1. Hang out with your horse- If you have never just hung out with your horse you are missing out. Sitting with them is a huge step in the bonding process. Bring a book with you and sit in your horse's stall or paddock and just be present with them. You might learn a few personality traits about your horse

  2. Stretching- Stretching is a wonderful horsemanship trick that we all should learn. When we wake up in the morning, usually the first thing we do is do a big stretch. Learn some ways to help your horse stretch those hard to get areas. Stretching can be a huge factor in working horses because it allows them to release any tension they may have.

  3. Build an obstacle course- Desensitizing our horses can be very rewarding. When we desensitize our horses it allows them to be less scared of certain objects. This can help in any style of riding. Get a few tarps, pool noodles and fake flowers and research some things to set up to get your horse familiar with strange items.

  4. Give your horse a spa day- Having a nice relaxing spa day with your horse can be therapeutic for you and your partner. Give your horse a bath, pull its mane or even clip up their coat. Doing this is a great way to bond with your horse.

  5. Liberty or ground work- Liberty work is a great way to connect with your horse in a very special way. Do some research on beginner tricks to try out. Ground work is also a great way to work with your horse if you are having behavioral problems. Work on loading and unloading the trailer or how to stand still when tied.

  6. Do a photo shoot-This just might be my favorite idea. Doing a photo shoot with your horse is always fun. You can either do this solo or bring a friend with you. Everyone loves to see goofy or semi professional pictures of you and your horse. Get all dressed up and find a great spot to snap a couple pictures

  7. Practice polo wrapping- When the weather is crappy I love to sharpen up on some skills. Polo wrapping is something most riders do whether it's because we are riding, the horse is injured or we are shipping. This is a great and useful skill to brush up on in case you may need to do it in the near future. Learning how to properly polo wrap is crucial because doing it incorrectly can severely hurt your horse

  8. Learn how to braid your horse- In the hunter world we are supposed to have our horses braided at certain shows. A braider is not very cheap so learning to do it yourself can be very helpful for you and your bank account. Watch some youtube videos and give it a shot. You will only learn by doing.

  9. Take a walk-Taking a walk with your horse is a great way to show your horse new things. Take them on a walk in a safe area, that might be just down the driveway, in the woods or even just around the barn. Talk to them and bond with them.

  10.  Get to know your horses vital signs- Knowing a horse's vital signs can come in handy. Learn how many breaths your horse takes in a minute, how to find their heart rate, and how to take their temperature. See if they have any scratches, bites, or bumps. Learning how your horse internally works can be super helpful if you find yourself in certain situations.
